Donald Trump is facing renewed criticism after appearing to forget a high-profile promise he made about issuing \u201c$2,000 checks to Americans.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The 79-year-old US President has spent months floating the idea of $2,000 tariff rebate checks, previously suggesting that many Americans could expect to receive the money by mid-2026. He has repeatedly argued that the payments would be funded by revenue generated from his trade tariffs.<\/p>\n

Tariff Revenue and Big Claims<\/h3>\n

In simple terms, Trump claimed that the United States was earning so much from his sweeping tariffs that he could afford to send every American a $2,000 cheque. However, recent comments suggest that plan may not be materialising any time soon.<\/p>\n

During an interview with the New York Times in the Oval Office last week, White House correspondents Katie Rogers and Tyler Pager questioned the Republican leader about tariffs and his earlier pledges.<\/p>\n

Rogers asked directly: \u201cYou\u2019ve promised $2,000 checks to Americans based off of your tariff revenues. When can they expect those?\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump appeared confused by the question, responding: \u201cI did do that? When did I do that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I mean, your -,\u201d Rogers began, before Trump interrupted: \u201cYeah, I\u2019m thinking. Well, I did $1,776 for the military.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conflicting Answers on the Timeline<\/p>\n

Pager then followed up, asking: \u201cWhen will those Americans get those checks?\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump replied: \u201cWell, I am going to. The tariff money is so substantial. That\u2019s coming in, that I\u2019ll be able to do $2,000 sometime. I would say toward the end of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked whether Congressional approval would be required, the President answered: \u201cNo, I don\u2019t believe we do. We have it coming in from other sources.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s Earlier Social Media Promise<\/h3>\n

Trump had been far more definitive about the $2,000 payments back in November, when he posted a strongly worded message on Truth Social defending his tariff policy.<\/p>\n

He wrote: \u201cPeople that are against Tariffs are FOOLS! We are now the Richest, Most Respected Country In the World, With Almost No Inflation, and A Record Stock Market Price. 401k\u2019s are Highest EVER.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are taking in Trillions of Dollars and will soon begin paying down our ENORMOUS DEBT, $37 Trillion.\u201d<\/p>\n

The President went on to add: \u201cRecord Investment in the USA, plants and factories going up all over the place. A dividend of at least $2000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Social Media Reaction<\/h3>\n

Following Trump\u2019s apparent confusion over his own pledge, social media users were quick to express frustration.<\/p>\n

One Twitter user wrote bluntly: \u201cYou were never getting $2000 tariff rebate checks, the same way you were never getting $5000 DOGE refund checks. But Trump doubled his family\u2019s net worth. Congratulations, you got conned.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another commented: \u201cTrump forgets he promised to give everyone $2000 from his tariffs, then says they\u2019re coming anyway. Even he can\u2019t keep track of all his lies.\u201d<\/p>\n
